Tax Season 2026: Starting off Strong

Tax season is officially here—and Your Legacy Federal Credit Union is ready to lead the charge. Kickstart your filing with confidence by following a three-part series packed with expert tips and essential reminders.

Part 1: Stay Secure While Filing

Start on the right foot by protecting your personal information:

  • Use secure networks—avoid public Wi-Fi when filing online.
  • Update software—patches in your browser and antivirus protect against threats.
  • Be wary of phishing—the IRS won’t contact you by email or phone for sensitive data.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication—adds a layer of defense.
  • Monitor accounts & shred documents after use.

Part 2: Gather Your Tax Essentials

Before the rush, compile all necessary documents:

  • Last year’s tax return
  • SSNs or Tax IDs for yourself, spouse, dependents
  • W-2s, 1099s (NEC, MISC, DIV, etc.)
  • Tax forms (1095-A for ACA, 1098-T for education, etc.)
  • Bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit
  • Records of deductions: charitable gifts, medical expenses, mortgage interest
  • Keep proof of estimated tax payments

Part 3: What to Do After Filing

Once your return’s in, don’t let things drop off:

  • Keep your return and supporting docs for 3 years—the audit window.
  • Record estimated payments and deduction receipts.
  • Save W-2s, 1099s, 1098s in a secure place.
  • Shred documents you no longer need—but be ready: Your Legacy FCU hosts a drive-through Shred Day on April 25, 2026, at their Tiffin location (10 AM–2 PM).

Why This Matters

This structured approach saves time, reduces stress, and helps protect you from fraud. Whether you file yourself or work with a pro, you’ll be prepared—and one step ahead.

Don’t just survive tax season—own it. Your Legacy FCU is here every step of the way, from prepping securely to clean-up after the filing frenzy.
